• Why does Job say in Job 7:16, "Let me alone; my days have no meaning"?
• In Job 8:5-6 Bildad said, "But if you will seek God earnestly and plead with the Almighty, if you are pure and upright, even now he will rouse himself on your behalf and restore you to your prosperous state."  This seems like reasonable advice.  What was Bildad missing?
• In Job 9, Job says that God is too wise and too powerful for a mere mortal to appeal to Him. Job cries out for a mediator in verse 33 saying, "If only there were someone to mediate between us, someone to bring us together."  How has our need for a mediator been answered?
• What did Paul say in Acts 22 that caused the crowd to quit listening and start shouting?

Wednesday, August 1, Job 10 - 12, Psalm 87

• Job prays in 10:8, "Your hands shaped me and made me. Will you now turn and destroy me?"  Since God made you, what should your attitude be toward your life?
• In chapter 11 Zophar told Job, "if you put away the sin that is in your hand" (verse 14) "You will surely forget your trouble." (verse 16).  Zophar believed that Job's problems were his fault because of sin.  What is wrong with assuming that someone in trouble has caused it themselves?
• Job says in 12:13, "To God belong wisdom and power."  How does knowing that God has all wisdom and power impact the way you face challenges?

• In 2 Chronicles 32:8 Hezekiah said, "With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles."  How does it change your approach to problems if you believe that God is with you?
• 2 Chronicles 33:9 says, "But Manasseh led Judah and the people of Jerusalem astray, so that they did more evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed before the Israelites."  Why would Manasseh be drawn to do evil?
• When Josiah was king, 2 Chronicles 34:11 says the kings of Judah had allowed the temple buildings to "fall into ruin."  In verse 21 Josiah said, "those who have gone before us have not kept the word of the Lord."  What did Josiah do about the neglect of the temple and of God's Word?
• Psalm 77 is written in a difficult time which caused the writer Asaph to wonder in verse 9, "Has God forgotten to be merciful?  Has he in anger withheld his compassion?"  But in verse 12 he writes, "I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds."  What benefit is there in remembering, during a difficult time, all the things that God has done?

• There is a big difference between what Asa did in the 36th year of his reign when he was attacked in 2 Chronicles 16 and what he had done early in his reign when he was attacked in 2 Chronicles 14.  Instead of crying out to God like he did when he was younger, he paid Ben-Hadad king of Aram to help him.  Hanani, a prophet, told him, "For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war."  Why did Asa rely on outside help when he had experienced relying on God when he was younger?
• Psalm 75:7 says, "It is God who judges.  He brings one down, he exalts another."  How does this truth impact the way you approach life?

The first nine chapters of 1 Chronicles have lots of names, tracing people's ancestry from Adam to after the return from captivity in Babylon.  These chapters gave people who were trying to reestablish life in Israel an awareness of who they were and where they had come from.  These chapters can be hard to read in our day because there are so many names of people we know nothing about.  Even as you read through lists of names, you'll find little insights that are helpful.

Week 19, May 6 - 12, 2018

Sin can have far-reaching effects as one thing leads to another.  In the next chapters of 2 Samuel, Amnon raped his sister Tamar.  Absalom murdered Amnon.  David banished Absalom. Absalom revolts against his father.  The whole nation goes to war, divided between Absalom and David.  Absalom is killed and David goes into mourning.  All this can be traced back to God's rebuke in 2 Samuel 12:11 after David sinned with Bathsheba and had Uriah killed, "Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you."

• How could Amnon go from being "in love" with his sister to hating her in 2 Samuel 13?

• David was not a perfect man.  How can he say in 2 Samuel 22:21, " according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me"?

• Judges 2:11-19 summarizes the cycles described in the book of Judges.  The nation would do evil, be oppressed, cry out in prayer, be set free for a while, and do evil again.  How can you avoid a cycle that is based on crying out to God only when you are in trouble?

• After the land was divided among the tribes of Israel, why was Joshua given his own allotment?

(Joshua 20:4)  If you lived in a city of refuge, what would your attitude be toward providing a fugitive a place to live?

• In Joshua 9 the Gibeonites lied to Israel, telling them they lived in a distant country.  The Israelites "did not inquire of the Lord."  Since the treaty Israel made with the Gibeonites was based on deception and lack of prayer, do you think God would expect Israel to honor the treaty?  If you want to check your answer, read 2 Samuel 21:1-2, which occurred hundreds of years later.
• In Mark 11 Jesus drove out people who were buying and selling in the temple courts.  Deuteronomy 14:24-26 allowed people to bring money to Jerusalem and buy the things they would offer in sacrifice.  Why did Jesus drive out people who were buying and selling to worshipers?

• Psalm 37:4 commands us to take delight in the Lord.  How do you do that?

• Deuteronomy 33 includes blessings for the tribes of Israel, but in Deuteronomy 31:16-17 God had said that the people would forsake Him and that He would forsake them.  Why is Moses pronouncing blessing on people who he knew would turn away from God?
• Why did God bury Moses such that no one knew where his grave was?
• When Jesus asked in Mark 8:17, "Are your hearts hardened?" what was He wanting to see in His disciples?
• In Mark 8:22-26 Jesus touched a blind man.  At first the man could only see partially.  Jesus touched him a second time and he could see clearly.  What should we do if we pray and it seems like our prayer is only partly answered?
