Week 10, March 5 - 11, 2017

Old Testament: Deuteronomy 1 - 12
In chapter 1 Moses describes the disobedience of the people when they heard from the spies and were afraid to enter the Promised Land.  In 1:27, Moses said, "You grumbled in your tents."  What is grumbling and why is it more likely to be done in your tent?  How can you avoid becoming someone whose faith fails while grumbling in your tent?

According to 2:14, how long did it take for the generation that refused to enter the Promised Land to die off?

In 3:26, not only did God tell Moses "no" to something he was asking, but He told Moses to quit asking.  Jesus has taught us to be persistent in prayer.  How do you know when it is time to accept a "no" answer from God or when it is time to keep asking?

4:29 says, "But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul."  Are you seeking God?  with all your heart and soul?

In 5:2-3, Moses said, "The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.  It was not with our ancestors that the Lord made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today."  The covenant at Horeb (Mt. Sinai) had been made nearly 40 years earlier with a generation that was now dead.  Why does Moses say the Lord made this covenant with those who were living?

What method does 6:7 give for parents to impress on their children the commands of the Lord?

6:11-12 warns against turning away from God during good times, saying "when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord."  How can you maintain a love for God during good times?

Why did God want Israel to completely destroy the seven nations he names in 7:1?

In 8:3 God says, "man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord."  What does it mean to live on the word that comes from the mouth of the Lord?

According to 9:4 why was God going to drive out the inhabitants of the Promised Land?

How does Moses summarize God's requirements in 10:12-13?

11:8 says, "Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess."  Why would obedience give someone strength?

In 11:18 God says, "Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds."  How would you do that?

Why did God command in chapter 12 that there was to be only one place of worship where sacrifices were to be offered?

Psalms 29 - 31
29:2 says, "Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name."  How do you do this?

30:5 says, "weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning."  When is it most important for you to keep this principle in mind?

31:19 says, "How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you,"  What do you think are the good things God has stored up?

New Testament: Romans 11 - 16
What does Paul mean in 11:17 referring to us as a wild olive shoot grafted in?

In 12:1 Paul tells us to offer ourselves as a living sacrifice.  What does this mean and how do you do it?

12:5 says that among Christians, "each member belongs to all the others."  Does your life reflect this?  How are you using the gifts God has given you to serve other believers?

We are commanded in 12:15, "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn."  Are you able to do both of these?

Based on 13:1-7 what should our attitude be toward the government?

14:1 commands us, "Accept the one whose faith is weak."  What does it mean to accept someone and why is this important?

Paul says in 14:10, "we will all stand before God’s judgment seat."  How does knowing this affect the way you live and the way you treat others?

15:1 says, "We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak."  What do you need to do to bear with someone's failings?

Paul warns us to watch out for "those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned." (16:17)  What does he say motivates people to do that?
